OiEau is taking part in the regional consultation workshop on floods in the Senegal River basin in the context of climate change, organised on 12 and 13 June in Dakar by the Organisation for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS).
Christophe Brachet, Deputy to the Director General of OiEau, took part in the consultation workshop on flooding in the Senegal river basin in the context of climate change, as part of a presentation on flood prevention in the Niger basin.
He outlined the various solutions for combating flooding:
- Protection, Structural measures, Hazard reduction
- Forecasting
- Prevention and land-use planning
- Public participation and awareness
- Risk culture
- Crisis preparation and management
To prevent the risk of overflow flooding from the River Niger, it is necessary to characterise hydrological events in a context of increased flooding due to climate change and to map the risks using innovative tools, such as LIDAR techniques.
